Renaissance lingerie woes
Jul. 30th, 2004 03:33 pmOK, I'll be the first to admit it -- I'm congenitally stupid when it comes to undergarments. I'm just really frustrated with the fact that I can drape garments just fine after reading a dress diary or three, but I can't get the friggin' basic underclothes right. Smocks usually take two or three attempts until I get something that will fit right. I haven't attempted a farthingale yet, because I'm not sure if my self-esteem can take the punishment. All I want is a nice set of renaissance lingerie, so it's possible to get started on the clothes people will *see*.
Corset take 1 was a strapless hemp boned jobbie that was too long and dug painfully into my hips and armpits. It had no tabs and the eyelets were laughable. It was made in the first flush of costuming obsession, when I had next to zero sewing skills.
Corset take 2 was much better, an effigy corset that I completely finished, only to find out that my small breasts (for my proportions, anyway) and Tummy Fat forced the bottom of the corset up, driving the top edge of the corset straight into my clavicles. Yep, too long again. And ugly to boot. This particular corset had been made while I had that bane of my existence, the Nasty Evil Flu Bug.
Corset take 3 was another effigy corset whose pattern I developed by hacking off parts of corset take 2 (lowering the neckline, lengthening the straps, reducing the lower edge curves, that sort of stuff). It was made of linen with silk thread bound eyelets. I was planning to enter it into an A&S tourney. Until I tried it on, and it was three sizes too small and fit like one of those Ren Faire under-breast bodices. Yeah, I was pretty frightened the first time I looked into a mirror wearing it. My husband didn't see anything wrong with it though. ;-D
Corset take 4 was computed off Drea's Corset Generator webpage. This is where I really start to think that maybe I should change my persona to 14th century instead of 16th so I don't have to deal with corsets at all. Everything is all fine and dandy until I try it on, and the razzafrazzin' corset is too short and too big. Which is what got me started on this rant in the first place.

*Sigh* OK, feeling much better now that I've got that out into the ether...
