I pick her up tomorrow!

We're renaming her Stella...a new name for a new life.

Boe and I picked up a couple of baby gates (to keep our girl out of the litterbox area), a pooper scooper, collar, leash, treats, food, and dishes. Oh, and toys.

Stella was neutered before she entered the shelter, so that's one less thing to do. Boe thinks she's wonderful, and I'm so excited to be able to bring her home tomorrow.

Well, when I say "we", I mean "I". I went to look at some dogs today since I was up early and all, and spent a lot of time interacting with 2 of them in particular:

Riley at the FWAC&C: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=12214722

And Skye at the Whitley County Animal Shelter: http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=10437246

In discussing the dogs with Boe, I really feel pulled towards Skye. She is extraordinarily sweet, but because she has spent the last 8-9 months living at the shelter with all the noise (!) and confusion, she has never been trained. However, in the hour and a half I spent with her today, I taught her how to sit and shake hands, and she does not pull on the leash unless there is another dog within sight to sniff. I really think she will be relatively easy to train, and just the thought of Skye living in that noisy (I couldn't hear myself think in the kennel area) environment for almost a year just breaks my heart.

I'm pretty sure I've found my dog. The shelter will be doing temperament testing for cat aggression tomorrow, and I'll need written authorization from our landlord to have a dog. But I think Skye may very well be coming home with us soon.

Boe's birthday present to me is a dog.

Now, he didn't wrap a puppy in a ribbon and give it to me -- he did the smart thing and is encouraging me to go to the shelters in our area to pick out an adult dog. The reasoning behind a dog is simple -- he and I know that I need to exercise more and that I am horrible at self-motivation. Therefore, with a dog, I will have no choice but to take our future pooch on walks.

In addition, I have wanted a dog for quite a while and now that Boe's income has increased (and is far more stable), we can afford a dog as well as our kittehs. Hence, we are getting a dog.

I have several pooches in mind -- one at the Ft Wayne ASPCA (female fawn greyhound), one at the Allen County Animal Care and Control (male liver/white large spaniel-type), 2 at the Whitley County ASPCA (female fawn/white Boxer/hound mix and male brindle/white Boxer/Lab mix), and one from a fosterer in the Anderson area (male brindle/white pitbull). The pittie was a rescue from a dogfighting ring the police had raided -- the sole dog not euthanized for aggression (the poor thing was used as a bait dog for not being "game" enough to fight). Any suggestions as to what I should watch for in interacting to make sure there are no/few issues to deal with?

I have training classes paid for, cat vaccinations up-to-date, and by this time next week, I should be a new doggie mama!

ETA: it looks like the spaniel at the AC&C has already been adopted.
